Though I'm not 100% satisfied, I am happy that I believe this technique will be very easy to redo as an actual desert scape. I also plan a black/grey urban scape. All of these should look pretty good!
Quick update today. I have been working on a gaming table, and will soon be also building some terrain. So far, I've set up an 8x4' MDF board (3/4" I think) on some saw horses. Should be able space for any of the games we play. I'd like to widen that 4' to 5 or 6, but that'll come later. In order to make the table useful for any game, I'm planning portable game mats made using canvas, latex caulking, sand, and kitty litter. Progress so far below! We start a few steps into the process. To begin, I laid out the canvas and applied brown latex caulk in roughly 1'x1' sections. After applying the caulk I sprinkled some sand and cat litter over the section, and pressed it in with a plastic bag. The two pictures above are after I followed that up with a coat of brown paint. Cheap craft acrylic stuff, nothing special. And the above 4 pictures are after a liberal dry brush with a mix of the base brown and a khaki shade called linen. It;s coming out a little too desert looking for me, but in person it is definitely brown. I also don't love the parts where the brush still had too much paint and you can tell it's a brush stroke. Either way, the next step will be to flock pretty large sections to make this a suitable Western Europe/generic grass type board.

Little update today...from the painting table. Currently working on 4 battalions of French line infantry to supplement the 6 I already have. I tried something new this time, did their trousers in several different colors. We'll see how that'll turn out. As you can see on their back side, I'm following my typical model of "looks good on the table, don't sweat the small stuff." I chose not to pick out the individual straps on the packs, and, honestly, once it's washed, it will still look good.
Enjoy! Another update ready right away! Having recently played a few Saga battles, I've shifted painting gears to work on my Saga almost exclusively. Gamer ADD at its finest! Here are the first few units. It amounts to 3 points of warriors, 2 are painted for the Mutatawi'a and the other are to be used as Moors (though, I plan to use them all interchangeably). Enjoy! I'm most excited about the Mutatawi'a, both in appearance and in game terms. They were really fun to play, and I think will look great massed together. I tried some free hand Arabic on the shields, and think it turned out okay. Most of them are names of the battle board abilities translated using a phone app, so they may not be exact. I don't speak Arabic...so who knows!
Haven't updated in a while, but a lot has been done over the past few weeks! Below are two batteries of foot artillery, nearing completion. The guns are almost done, will be mounted, and the everything will be based up. The brown/red uniformed crews are Wurzburg and the green/red are Saxon. Realizing now that these are blurry....when they're done I'll take some better ones!
Up next will be some Cleves-Berg cavalry I finished earlier today. Enjoy! I'm ringing in the new year today with a bit of work on my French allies (or enemies, depending on if we're fighting a hypothetical battle) from Cleves-Berg.
As usual, they're meant to be the best representation I can get, since I can't actually find anyone who makes actual 15mm Berg infantry. They still need some work, and basing. Looking in to whether or not they were organized along French lines, or if elite companies should form their own battalions. Comment/enjoy! |
